  • Goa: Forest department mulls over marine wildlife division

The increasingly frequent instances of injured and dead turtles getting beached on Goa’s coastline , and the more recent sperm whale carcass that washed ashore on Bimvel beach, has urged the state forest department to contemplate the establishment of a marine wildlife division.

In the financial year 2018-19, a total of 29 turtles washed ashore on the beaches of North Goa alone.

The wildlife division takes care of animals at the various sanctuaries and national parks across the state. Marine animals were included in the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 much later, after an amendment. Accordingly, more staff and infrastructure are required for the improvement of logistics, like, vehicles for rescue operations along the coastline
