  • State to electrify all households by September

  • The Rajasthan government aims to electrify 19,000 dhanis (hamlets) and about 10 lakh rural households under rural electrification schemes by September this year.

  • According to government records, 95,000 dhanis and all 43,199 inhabited villages have been electrified in the state. A village is said to be electrified if at least 10% households get electricity.

  • Under Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, or Saubhagya, electricity connections will be provided to over 40 million families in rural and urban areas by December. The work on the scheme started in October 2017.

  • Official data reveals that out of 19.56 lakh non-electrified rural households, 2.45 lakh have been electrified. In terms of overall electrification status, the worst districts are Dholpur at 60% and Barmer at 61% while the best districts are Sawai Madhopur at 97.62% and Jaipur at 96.55%.

  • While the Deendayal Upadhaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, launched in 2015, has resulted in electricity reaching all the villages of Rajathan by August 2017, there are households in thousands of villages that still remain in the dark. The Saubhagya scheme funds the cost of last-mile connectivity to willing households to help achieve the goal of lighting every household by Dec31.

  • Rajasthan is aiming to advance that date by three months. The households where the national electricity grid can’t reach due to inaccessible terrain are being provided with solar power packs.
