·        Youth and eco-clubs made compulsory for all schools

  • It will now be mandatory for all schools, including government-run institutions, to form eco-clubsand youth clubs. In a directive to school managements, the government stated that the move was aimed at empowering students to explore environmental concepts and actions beyond the confines of a syllabus or curriculum.
  • The present academic year will see the clubs being used to create awareness about water conservation. They will organise activities and create awareness on the subject as part of the central government’s Jal Shakti Abhiyan.

  • Youth clubs in schools are an instrument to develop life skills, build self-esteem, develop self-confidence and resilience, and counter negative emotions of stress, shame and fear. Eco-clubs in schools will empower students to participate and take up meaningful environmental activities and projects. They are a forum through which students can reach out to influence and engage their parents and neighbourhood communities to promote sound environmental behaviour.

  • At the primary level, state-run schools get Rs 5,000 to operate youth and eco-clubs. At the government secondary and higher secondary level, they can claim between an amount of Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 as annual assistance.
Last year, the government had compiled a database of eco-clubs that were operational in schools across the state. Science teachers had also been trained to hold activities to spread awareness about solid waste management and other environmental issues.

  • Youth and eco-clubs in government schools are also expected to act as summer camps ‘where students can participate in debates, music, arts, sports, reading, physical activities after school hours and during vacation’.
